XVI Bieńczyce – previously, it was a suburban village of Kraków, but now it has become highly urbanized. The predominant buildings are apartment blocks, but single-family houses can also be found, especially in the northeastern part of the district. The history of Bieńczyce dates back to 1224, and its name derives from the village owner, Benedykt. Initially, the village belonged to the Church of St. Michael the Archangel and St. Stanislaus Bishop on the Rock, and later to the Church of St. Florian.
In 1949, the construction of the city of Nowa Huta began on the fields in the eastern part of Bieńczyce. From 1962 to 1979, the residential estate of Bieńczyce Nowe was built on the territory of the former village, which was incorporated into Kraków. This estate is characterized by a loose arrangement of detached buildings, mainly 5- and 11-storey buildings. The central axis of the estate is the Planty Bieńczyckie park, inspired by the Planty Krakowskie. Bieńczyce Nowe includes neighborhoods such as Strusia, Kalinowe, Na Lotnisku, Wysokie, Kazimierzowskie, Jagiellońskie, Przy Arce, Niepodległości, Albertyńskie, and Złotej Jesieni. <BACK>
XV Mistrzejowice – the history of this place dates back to 1270 when it was first mentioned as “Mistrevich”. Throughout the centuries, this village was owned by the “Krakowska Kapituła Katedralna” and had about 20 houses and 100 inhabitants. In the 19th century, the population increased, and this area was also used as part of the Kraków Fortress. In 1951, “Mistrzejowice” were incorporated into Kraków as a cadastral district.
From 1968 to 1982, a new architectural-urban plan was implemented in “Mistrzejowice”, which was intended to be an expansion of the “Nowa Huta” district. This project was developed by a team led by Professor Witold Cęckiewicz and consisted of four separate neighborhoods. The entire layout was meant to symbolize a tree, where the main street, “Srebrnych Orłów”, represented the trunk, and the residential blocks resembled leaves and fruits. Commercial and service pavilions were built as part of this plan. “Mistrzejowice” is home to many cultural institutions, such as cultural centers, libraries, and a cultural club. In terms of education, there are primary schools, general high schools, and technical schools.
An important place is the church of St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe, which was consecrated in 1983 by Pope John Paul II. During the period of the Polish People’s Republic (PRL), this parish played a role as a center of resistance against communist rule.
“Mistrzejowice” have good infrastructure and offer diverse educational opportunities for residents. It is a place with a rich history and developed infrastructure that preserves its unique architectural and urban characteristics. <BACK>
III Prądnik Czerwony – formerly – a village near Krakow, now – an urban unit in Krakow inhabited by over 40,000 people. Residential housing dominates the majority of the area, consisting mainly of high-rise residential buildings owned by the “Prądnik Czerwony” housing cooperative. This area has a rich history dating back to 1105, when the first mention of the village appeared. “Prądnik Czerwony” formed a municipality together with Olsza and was a site for the construction of military facilities within the Krakow Fortress, where with development, care facilities, cemeteries, residential neighborhoods, and sports facilities were also established.
Important national roads pass through “Prądnik Czerwony,” and public transportation provides connections to other parts of the city. Cultural institutions, libraries, schools, as well as green areas such as parks and squares are also located in the area. Further investments are planned, including the construction of parking lots and tram lines. “Prądnik Czerwony” is a diverse and developed urban unit that offers residents many opportunities and amenities. <BACK>
XI Podgórze Duchackie is a good location with quick access to the river. The district is not touristy but attractive for families, singles, and students, offering schools, student dormitories, and a wide range of service and commercial facilities, especially in the Bonarka shopping center. This part of the city is safe, neighbors are friendly, it is developing dynamically, and the commute to the city center takes about 15-40 minutes. Unfortunately, there is a lack of green areas, but there are recreational spaces, and new sidewalks and bike paths are planned. The infrastructure for cyclists is limited.
It has many attractions for children, with preschools and primary schools available, but the offering of secondary schools is modest. Medical facilities and pharmacies are also available.
In summary, the district has its advantages and disadvantages, such as good transportation and educational offerings, but a limited amount of green space, heavy traffic during peak hours, and occasional air pollution issues. <BACK>
I Old Town (Stare Miasto), known as the heart of Krakow, is one of the most desirable places to live. It is the historical center of the city, where you can find many beautiful townhouses and apartments with exceptional character. The proximity to cultural attractions and excellent transportation connections make Stare Miasto an ideal place for urban life enthusiasts.
In 1978, Stare Miasto, along with Wawel, Kazimierz, and Stradom, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 1994, together with Wawel, Stradom, Kazimierz, Podgórze, Nowy Świat, and Piaski, it was recognized as a Monument of History.
Throughout the year, it is lively and bustling. This place pulsates with life at all times of the day. There are crowds of tourists, tireless flower sellers, street painters and musicians, as well as a row of horse-drawn carriages waiting for guests. <BACK>
V Krowodrza is a former suburb, annexed in 1910 as a cadastral district. It developed alongside the city’s growth, becoming a more industrialized part of Krakow. After the war, there was intensive development, supported by spatial development plans from 1954 to 1964. From 1973 to 1990, it constituted a separate large district.
Today, it is a diverse area with monuments, parks, and a rich infrastructure of its own, including educational, sports, and cultural facilities. It is mainly inhabited by students and individuals starting their professional careers due to the type of housing offered by developers – small apartments in apartment buildings designed for single individuals. <BACK>
II Grzegórzki is a former village near Kraków, currently a popular residential district in Krakow. The name is connected to the ancestral name of the Małopolska magnates, Toporczyków (Ród Starżów-Toporczyków), who were the previous owners of these lands.
Thanks to its incorporation into the urban area in 1910 and infrastructure development, this region has gained popularity and attractiveness. In the 1970s, residential construction flourished here, including apartment buildings and modern houses.
Residents have easy access to the city center, numerous cultural attractions, parks, museums, theaters, and cinemas. Medical care and educational opportunities are well-developed, and the crime rate is low.
Grzegórzki attracts affluent Poles, artists, and students (due to the proximity to universities). It offers a good range of educational and healthcare services for families with children and older people. Park Strzelecki is one of the most well-known attractions in Krakow, and the district has numerous playgrounds and allotment gardens. The “Unitarg” market is a place for trade and an antique market equipped with a monitoring system.
Grzegórzki is a district with low crime rates and an attractive lifestyle. <BACK>
XII Bieżanów-Prokocim is popular among students and seniors. Low property prices and excellent urban infrastructure attract these groups. The district is less attractive for families with children due to a limited educational offering. Residents appreciate the extensive commercial and service infrastructure, attractive prices, and good public transportation. While some complain about traffic congestion on the streets, most people do not have this problem. The district has a well-developed bus network, and a car journey to the center of Krakow takes about 20-25 minutes or 30-35 minutes by tram. However, during peak hours, travel time by car can extend up to 1 hour.
Bieżanów is part of the XII Bieżanów-Prokocim district. The village was located in the Serafy valley. The first historical mention of Bieżanów dates back to 1212, and the name is derived from the personal name Bieżan. From 1772, it was under Austrian control, and from 1778 to around 1910, it was privately owned.
The railway lines from Krakow to Dębica and from Bieżanów to Wieliczka, opened in 1856-1857, contributed to the rapid development of the village. In the second half of the 19th century, Bieżanów was a large village with a developed craft and industrial sector. In 1922, a unified spelling of the name Bieżanów was established. In the 1970s, the construction of the residential complex Bieżanów Nowy began as part of Krakow’s development concept. The area included health clinics, schools, cultural centers, and shops. It does not stand out in terms of climate compared to other districts in Krakow, and its vegetation has been significantly transformed by human activity.
Prokocim belongs to the XII Bieżanów-Prokocim district. Human presence traces have been found in this area since the Paleolithic era, and from the 13th century BCE, the Lusatian culture developed there. In the 18th century, Prokocim became the residence of the Wodzicki family, who built a manor house, and in the 19th century, a stone palace. In 1895, Prokocim was acquired by Erazm Jerzmanowski and later passed into the ownership of the Augustinian Order. During the occupation, the community was included into the administrative borders of Krakow.
The name mainly refers to the territory and buildings of the former village that existed until 1941, as well as residential area, mostly consisting of private homes. Around 1965, the large residential complex of Kozłówek was established, and later, the residential complex Nowy Prokocim, construction of which began in 1974. In a broader sense, Prokocim also includes the Nowy Prokocim housing estate, located to the east of Stary Prokocim, mainly composed of multi-story buildings. This district is located in the southeast part of Krakow.
Currently, Prokocim is a typical urban residential area. <BACK>
IV Prądnik Biały, currently a part of Kraków, is an area with approximately 10,000 inhabitants, dominated by high-rise apartment buildings.
The ancestral village existed as early as the 12th century and was divided into two parts: Prądnik Wielki (in the 70s of the 15th century, the eastern part belonging to the Benedictines of Tyńiec started being called Magna Prandnik, and a hundred years later in Polish – Prądnik Wielki) and Prądnik Mały. Over the centuries, names were changing, and it currently bears the name Prądnik Biały. The village was known for the production of white flour and bread called “prądnicki”. At the beginning of the 19th century, the village belonged to state-owned properties, and later to private owners. During this time, on the foundations of the former episcopal palace, the current manor house with annexes, as well as tavern and outbuildings, were built. A hundred years later, there were over 650 residents and around 45 houses, a one-classroom public school, 3 mills, a tannery, and a brickyard.
The city suffered from a lack of land for further expansion, limited by the fortifications of Kraków Fortress. Through the efforts of the mayor, Juliusz Leo, the concept of the so-called “Great Krakow” was developed, according to which the territories of many surrounding towns were to be annexed to the city, thus increasing its area nearly sevenfold. The construction of new residential estates: Prądnik Biały Zachód and Prądnik Biały Wschód, took place from 1975 to 1985.
The district is developing dynamically, and new residential estates and parks are planned. The district is characterized by numerous recreational areas, and the residents value the peace and well-developed commercial and service infrastructure. It is a friendly place for those seeking tranquility and relaxation. People of different ages and material statuses live here. Despite certain security difficulties, crime is consistently decreasing. There are many educational institutions available for children, including public kindergartens where there are no problems with enrollment. Public transportation is well-developed, although traveling by car outside peak hours takes less time than by public transportation. The area also offers attractive cycling routes leading to neighboring towns. <BACK>
